The Spodcast #12: TwitchCon, Dauntless, And Guild Wars 2
Recording times didn’t work out quite the way we’d hoped this week, so everyone got to be just a little bit loopy in this episode of the Spodcast, where we discuss fast food, travel, the dark ages of Web 1.0, and–ever so occasionally–video games.
Show Notes:
1:08 – The Ancient Internet
5:16 – Fast Food or something
9:18 – TwitchCon
28:10 – Guild Wars 2
47:15 – Dauntless
52:47 – Mailbag
53:12 – What long-running franchise have you played the most games in?
1:03:43 – What are some of your favorite gaming protagonists?

No big deal, but is the podcast rss link hunkydory? I’m getting an unspecified error trying to download this episode via the Podcast app on an iPhone – that in itself isn’t unusual; the Podcast app has always been a bit dodgy. But also the rss link for the Spodcast category just points to:
http://spoilerwarning.net/
which doesn’t look quite right. I can’t subscribe to that link, although I can still sub to:
http://spoilerwarning.net/index.php/feed/
as if that was a podcast. (It’s this latter which is giving me a download error for #12 (but is letting me download #11 OK).)
Hm. For some reason, the title link is just looping back to the main site. Not sure why the widget works that way. The little RSS icon next to it does have a link for the correct Spodcast feed, though. And in case you can’t see that for some reason, the Spodcast feed is http://spoilerwarning.net/index.php/category/spodcast/feed/
Ah cool – I can subscribe to that, and then whatever you did to the .mp3 & .ogg links has also fixed the download error issue. Sorted! 😎
MP3 and OGG links are broken, lead to 404 errors as of the time of this typing.
Sorry, should be fixed now. They were uploaded to the wrong directory.
Heck, DOOM’s been ported to ATMs and smart watches and prolly uppity fridges by now. Or “Hell,” I should probably say. (A real place, apparently.)
I quite liked CJ from GTA: San Andreas. Much moreso than any subsequent GTA protagonist, anyway. And I was a big fan of Commissioner Pravin Lal, if he counts! Beyond them it’s basically Geralt & Batman…
“Beware he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master.”

I recently picked up Guild Wars 2, but then dropped it again. It was funny as I’m still part of the Eikosi league so it’s funny seeing the old characters that no one has logged into for like 3 years. They’ve definitely shaved down the XP requirements to level as it didn’t feel nearly as grindy as it did when it first started. I’ve actually picked up World of Warcraft again, and the contrast is interesting as GW2 combat still feels far more fluid than WoW. But WoW has made much larger strides in trying to make their combat more interesting than just, babysitting cooldowns. There’s a lot more movement and paying attention to environment or additional mechanics (additional buttons or resources). But it hasn’t changed that much.
In GW2, there are zone-wide meta-events in all 4 maps from the Heart of Thorns expansion. I’ve been playing since launch, and actually found out about the game when you guys showed it off during one of the betas. I think a lot of your issues with the game at launch have been addressed to some extent, if you try to go in fresh rather than do things the way you did originally. Also, heart quests are not a particularly good way to level. You get much more XP from the events, and the hearts are mostly there to get you in the areas where events will happen, and because test players apparently got confused about what to do with no quests at all.
The Ultima series is the easy answer for me. I’ve not played all of the games (or at least, not beyond a certain point), but there are 10 games in the main series (Ultima 1-9, Ultima 7 has two parts but they’re complete games in their own rights), there’s two spin-offs (The Savage World and Martian Dreams), as well as the two Ultima Underworld games. Not to mention the console ports.
Roger Wilco was a pretty good protagonist, the lazy guy in the future, almost accidentally saving the day.
and of course I forget the classic: Guybrush Threepwood! Mighty Pirate!
If I were answering that favourite gaming protagonists question, I would actually be sorely tempted to say Dishonored 2’s Emily. She’s cool, and she might be one of the more relateable video game protagonists I’ve played (y’know, considering I’m also a 25-year-old woman who grew up with tomboyish interests, lost my mother at a fairly young age, and is honestly kind of an irresponsible mess). The Courier from Fallout: New Vegas would also be a strong contender; there’s a lot of great ways to roleplay them, and there’s even one version of the Courier I liked so much that I’ve played as him multiple times.
You might well apologise for all the fast food talk – I’m having my first burger since my near-fatal heart attack two years ago, and it’s all your fault! Loose Talk Costs Lives…
(OK well just to clarify: it’s really because I’ve just discovered my new town in Britain has a Five Guys, and I’ve done all the nutritional calculations and it’s All Good. So if I coincidentally keel over and never post again, don’t worry: you’ll not have blood on yer ‘ands…)
Blimey. That’s a quality burger!
🍔🤘
Josh, do you have Waffle House in Las Vegas? Because that chain seems to be particularly limited to the SE, according to this map http://onlineathens.com/sites/default/files/images/3620805_web1_waffle-house-eclipse.jpg
Also, I saw a Tim Hortons in SAINT LOUIS of all places, so you never know where they could end up https://i.imgur.com/c0ou0mr.jpg
The real question re: Guild Wars 2 is whether or not the guild name “Ludonarrative Dissonance” is taken.
I’m getting to this one a bit late, but as a GW2 player since launch it was very interesting to hear perspectives on how the game has changed, especially when some of the things Josh mentioned as having been changed are actually exactly the same as they’ve always been (eg event frequency. Josh recalls only seeing around one event per hour at launch, and far more now, but there’s never been any change to how frequently and where events spawn in the core game maps. The cast also mentions leveling, and while they did make it faster to get to level 20, the experience from there is just the same as it’s always been. GW2 has always made it fairly fast to hit the level cap by MMO standards). This is an interesting case of whatever the opposite of rose tinted spectacles would be called.
I fully agree on the game not doing a great job at explaining how you’re “supposed” to be playing it if you want to avoid grinding. The developers’ intention to counteract Chris’ issue of grinding the same events over and over seems to have been that players should switch to a different zone in the same level range when they feel they’re done with the place they’re currently in. However, it was only later that they automatically unlocked fast travel points in each starting zone, so back at launch you’d have no idea that going to another starting zone was even an option, or how to do it (and even now a lot of players don’t notice the fast travel points on the other side of the world map). Since you still get XP from content below your level there is almost always some unexplored world that you could go and uncover if you want to see something new while leveling. If the devs had found a better way of making it clear that exploration is a big part of the intended experience, and how easy it is to go out and explore, then the game might have been better received at launch than it was.
