Save vs. Death EP1: Attack of the Soup Monsters
This holiday season, it’s always good to remember what we’re thankful for. For example, that Dungeons and Dragons isn’t nearly as obtuse and inscrutable as it once was. And what better way to remind ourselves of that than to actually go back and try to play old D&D?
Welcome to Save vs. Death, the series where Josh and Rutskarn attempt to survive a playthrough of Dungeons and Dragons 2nd edition! THAC0! Two completely different ways to multi-class! No encounter tables!
Will any of our stalwart hosts make it out alive?

That was a delight. Don’t have much to add beyond that, just wanted to have you guys know I really engaged with the content. If there’s more opportunities for something like this I’d love it. Keep up the good work boys.
As someone who still runs 2E games to this day, I loved everything about this. My version of 2E is so house ruled as to be almost unrecognizable, but it was a lot of fun listening to Josh and Rutskarn play it as intended.
My favorite line was Rutskarn saying 2E was ‘about as intuitive as a Soviet submarine.’ XD
I played so much 2E back in the day, after having moved from 1E, that the rules actually seem intuitive to me. All this stuff about THAC0 makes me think, “Hey, it’s easier than the giant hit dice monster table in the DM’s guide,” which I still remember as page 74 & 75, because I always had it open.
Oh, and stat order is supposed to be Str, Int, Wis, Dex, Con, Chr.
