The Codex, specifically the one in the first Mass Effect, always struck me as the work of an enthusiastic writer fleshing out his dream sci-fi setting. I actually really enjoyed reading it, but it was all the more disappointing when so little of that material was actually used and in even the first game’s case, was directly retconned by the actual story.
I disagree with Campster on his Celeste tangent. Yes, sure, it’s a relatively simple story, but it’s not a “Yay, let’s be the best we can be!” story. Not only is it not that upbeat, but it’s about overcoming massive challenges.
I don’t think the difficulty clashes with the story at all, I think it strengthens it. The story wouldn’t work nearly as well if the game wasn’t challenging.
