Josh, to learn not to button mash you might try something like Arkham Asylum, where mashing is possible but avoiding it is key to a fluid fun experience.

Look, fighting games are overrated …
Like everything, making a good combat system (melee or otherwise) takes time, effort, skill and knowledge. Doom 2017 had one of the best, most refreshing FPS (with some melee) combat experiences in a while. Many shooters are not as good, and many, many melee games are very poor for combat. Batman was good, the Souls-etc games were good (in a different way), and I think there’s some indie Souls-esque games that also have decent combat.
The wolves in Long Dark’s story mode need to have their numbers cut in half, at least for the first zone / area. I’m stuck at the church on the outskirts of Milton (1st town / hub), because I keep dying to wolves. So annoying; I *might* come back this weekend to continue the game, but the acting in the cutscenes / audio logs is also pretty bad. (Different voice actors than sandbox mode?)
TLD *really* wants you to throw torches and flares at wolves, and keep you running from building to car… I would really have liked it if they let you crane your neck around when you are sitting in a car, though.
After seeing some of the second chapter, though, I think I’m going back to the sandbox. “I need to find my ex, not mess around solving some Scooby mystery!”
Long Dark use to have a big problem with wolves running right at you as soon as they detected you. They’ve fixed it somewhat to where if you see them early, you can out run them, or they may only follow you for a while without attacking. That’s probably a random chance. Important though, do NOT throw flares or torches at them. It doesn’t work as well as holding the torch. But there are just TOO MANY wolves. Even if you kill them, another just takes it’s place. Even with over 500+ hours of play, I still wish there was a lot less wolves and that they were a bit more dangerous. Maybe only worrysome if there were a pack?
